About gum diseases

All gum disease is caused by plaque. Gum disease describes swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. Early signs and symptoms of gum disease (also known as gingivitis) are : Red and swollen gums Bleeding gums after brushing If gingivitis is left uncured, gum disease progresses to periodontitis which is characterized by: Bad breath (halitosis) An unpleasant taste in mouth Loose teeth due to underlying bone loss that can make eating difficult Gum abscesses (collections of pus that develop under gums or teeth)

Plaque and bleeding gums

Plaque is a film of micro-organisms, which forms on the teeth and gums. Many of the bacteria in plaque have been shown to be the main cause of gum disease. So. to prevent and cure gum disease, one needs to remove all the plaque from teeth every day.

Gingivitis means inflammation of the gums. This is when the gums around the teeth become very red and swollen. Often the swollen gums bleed when they are brushed during cleaning.

Why do we need scaling?

Long-standing gingivitis can turn into periodontal disease. There are a number of types of periodontal disease and they all affect the tissues supporting the teeth. As the disease gets worse the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw is lost, making the teeth loose. If this is not treated by scaling and curettage the teeth may eventually fall out.

Maintaining gum health

Five steps to prevent gum disease and to maintain good oral health:

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day with toothbrush toothpaste and floss once a day to remove plaque between teeth.
  2. Keep a check on your gums. Any sign of gingivitis should be taken note of seriously
  3. Dental check up every 6 months is a must along with professional cleaning to remove stains and plaque.
  4. A healthy diet is important for the health of your teeth and gums along with your overall health. Consumption of excess sugar is one of the primary causes of dental problems. With the proper nutrients that come from healthy eating and proper oral hygiene, you can fight cavities and gingivitis.
  5. Don't smoke. Smoking is a major contributor to oral diseases.
